Charlotte Hornets' LaMelo Ball and Toronto Raptors' Scottie Barnes Honored
Ball Captures Eddie Gottlieb Trophy
New York, NY - Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball has been named the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, given to the NBA Rookie of the Year. Ball, the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, impressed with his all-around play in his second season in the league.
The 20-year-old averaged 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. Ball also led the Hornets to a 43-39 record, their best since the 2015-16 season.
Barnes Wins Kia Rookie of the Year Award
Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes has been named the winner of the 2021-22 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award. Barnes, the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, emerged as a do-it-all player for the Raptors.
The 20-year-old averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, while also contributing with his defense and playmaking. Barnes helped lead the Raptors to a 48-34 record, their best since the 2018-19 season.
Ball and Barnes join a long list of distinguished players who have won the Kia Rookie of the Year Award, including Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and LeBron James.
